Can't Wait For Saturday End of an era for college football in Detroit makes me sad

Feb. 11—***
I have covered a college football game at Detroit's Ford Field. One of Ron Zook's Illinois teams played Western Michigan there one year. It was a lot of fun.
But I always figured I would be back someday to cover the Motor City Bowl (or whatever it was called). Eventually, Illinois would get an invite and I'd spend Christmastime in Detroit.
No such luck.
On Tuesday, Ford Field announced it is ending its run as a bowl host.
The Motor City Bowl started in nearby Pontiac in 1997 and moved to Ford Field early in the century.
The game has featured multiple sponsors. Often, it matched a team from the Big Ten against the MAC.
Illinois never played in the game. In December, Northwestern beat Central Michigan in what will likely be the final edition.
Bowls seem to be retracting. The LA Bowl is also going away. I'd watch all of them, but I understand why some think there are too many.
