Can't Wait For Saturday Heisman voters — myself included — got it right

Dec. 14—***

I often don't vote for the Heisman Trophy winner. Not intentionally. It's just the way it works out.

A year ago, I gave my first-place vote to Boise State tailback Ashton Jeanty and not Colorado do-everything Travis Hunter.

Over the 30-plus years I have been a voter, I've probably voted for the winner half the time. If that.

No such issue in 2025. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who took the honor Saturday night, was at the top of my ballot. In fact, all three of my votes went to the Big Ten, with Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin at at No. 2 and Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith at No. 3.

Sayin finished fourth and Smith was sixth. Both figure to be major contenders for the 2026 Heisman. ESPN's way-too-early projection lists them 1-2, followed by Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton, Miami receiver Malachi Toney, Texas quarterback Arch Manning and Mississippi quarterback Trinidad Chambliss.

Clip and save the list. I promise next year's Heisman race will include others not even on the radar, like Mendoza going into this season.
