I am not convinced Ed Orgeron is a great college football coach. He struggled big time while in charge at Mississippi, going 10-25 in three losing seasons.

A year as interim coach at Southern California, where he replaced fired Lane Kiffin, upped his profile with a 6-2 record.

Three years later, at LSU, Orgeron again jumped into the hot seat, replacing fired Les Miles first as interim head coach and eventually landing the job for good.

His LSU teams won a combined 19 games in 2017-18. Very good work, though still not enough wins for the folks in Baton Rouge.

But in 2019, under Coach O's direction, LSU had as good of a season as any team in college football history. It won the national title, went undefeated and produced the Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 NFL draft pick, Joe Rurrow.

That memory from seven seasons ago doubtless led to the decision by Kiffin, now at LSU, to hire Orgeron as an assistant for recruiting and defense.

Orgeron is being paid $100,000 but his value is worth so much more than that.

When anyone talks about the glory days for the Tigers, they are referencing 2019 and Orgeron.

Will it lead to another head coaching gig for the 60ist Orgeron? Maybe and I hoe so.

His personality is good for college football and should help balance out some of the bad vibes from Kiffin.
