Technically, I guess, Jeff Brohm was fired by Illinois at the end of the 2011 season. He was part of Ron Zook's final staff that was let go despite a winning record and a bowl victory.
Brohm didn't let the temporary setback keep him from what has become a successful career as a head coach.
Louisville, where he starred at quarterback before a seven-year run in the NFL, just gave him a contract extension. His pay jumps to over $8 million on a deal that keeps him with the Cardinals through the 2033 season.
Hired at Illinois by Zook and former offensive coordinator Paul Petrino, Brohm came to Illinois after a season working with quarterbacks at Florida Atlantic.
He did a good job running the Illinois offense in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl a win against future Big Ten member UCLA.
Brohm was out of work for about five minutes after the firing at Illinois, landing a coordinator position at UAB. That led to an offensive coordinator/assistant head coach position at Western Kentucky.
I have a specific memory of saying out loud, early and often, that Brohm would be the next big thing in coaching. And he was, winning at least 10 games in two of his three seasons with the Hilltoppers.
Purdue swept in and brought Brohm to West Lafayette for six successful seasons.
When his alma mater called before the 2023 season, Brohm returned home. It has been a perfect fit for Brohm and the school. He is 28-12 in three seasons.
The only missing piece is a spot in the College Football Playoff and with his skill as a coach and recruiter, it is only a matter of time.
