Half of this year's Heisman Trophy finalists come from schools that know all about what it's like the win the biggest individual award in the sport.
Only Southern California with eight all-time winners owns more Heismans than Notre Dame and Ohio State. This year, the two schools will be represented by Irish tailback Jeremiyah Love and Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin.
If Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia or Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza win, it will be the first Heisman winner for their schools.
The finalists were unveiled Monday and will be on the stage in New York on Saturday night for the Heisman presentation.
The News-Gazette has two voters and I have been a part of the process for more than three decades. It has been an honor to be a voter.
The folks in charge of the Heisman ask voters not to reveal who they picked before the show Saturday. I will be watching after covering the Illinois-Nebraska basketball game at State Farm Center.
Two former Illinois stars have been finalists, with no winners. Dick Butkus in 1964 and Jim Grabowski in 1965 came closest to winning.
The Heisman has been around since 1935 when University of Chicago halfback Jay Berwanger won the award.
Though Southern Cal quarterback Caleb Williams won the Heisman in 2022, the school wasn't in the Big Ten yet. The Big Ten hasn't won it since Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith in 2006.
The most recent Notre Dame winner was receiver Tim Brown in 1987, The last player from the SEC to win was LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels in 2023.
