I started the Cardinal Canopy Podcast as a fan-focused passion project to provide a rational fan's take on all things Stanford sports. On the podcast, I will be providing in-depth breakdowns of team performances, practice updates, game previews, and game analyses. I will typically be joined by a special guest to discuss Stanford sports and the broader college sports landscape.
In this first episode on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, I am joined by former Stanford long snapper and Twitter legend Bailey Parsons for a wide-ranging conversation about Stanford football past, present, and future.
We begin with Bailey’s journey to the Farm, starting with growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, and his early introduction to football. Bailey talks about becoming a long snapper and the unique recruiting process that eventually brought him across the country to Stanford as a specialist.
From there, we get into what makes Stanford football different. Bailey talks about balancing elite academics with Power Four football, the relationships that are built inside the program, and why those friendships and experiences stay with players long after their final game.
We also discuss Stanford’s academic standards and why Bailey believes they shouldn’t be viewed as something holding the program back, but rather as an essential part of what makes Stanford, Stanford.
We then turn to Bailey’s playing career and some of his favorite memories from his time on the Farm. He talks about playing under David Shaw, who he describes as a family-first coach and a genuine father figure to his players, and reflects on what made Shaw such an important figure during his Stanford career.
Bailey also opens up about the more complicated final chapter of his Stanford career under Troy Taylor. That conversation goes beyond wins and losses and gets into leadership, trust, accountability, expectations, and just how important culture is to the success of a college football program.
Bailey also shares some great behind-the-scenes stories from practices, the locker room, and special teams meetings that give a glimpse into what life is actually like inside Stanford football.
A big part of our conversation focuses on where the program stands today and where it could be headed next. We break down spring ball, what players actually get out of those practices, what coaches are evaluating, and what signs former players look for when determining whether a program is moving in the right direction.
We also talk about the new era of Stanford football under Tavita Pritchard, the renewed emphasis on community and accountability, and why building a strong culture could be so important to getting Stanford back to where it strives to be.
Bailey gives his thoughts on the offensive line, special teams, the locker room, and some of the areas that could determine how quickly the Cardinal can turn things around.
Finally, we look ahead to the 2026 Stanford football season. Bailey gives his predictions for the Cardinal, what he wants to see from the team this fall, and what a successful season could look like as Stanford enters a new chapter.
