Carmel grad Winston Berglund became the latest Purdue football player to announce his plan to enter the transfer portal in January.
Berglund, a linebacker and safety, played mostly special teams under coach Barry Odom this past season. He was poised for a bigger role as a redshirt freshman in 2024 before a shoulder injury shortened his season.
Berglund totaled 15 tackles (two for loss) and one sack in two seasons. He becomes the third defensive player to announce his intent to transfer, joining defensive backs D’Mon Marable and Stu Smith.
Players cannot officially enter the transfer portal until January, per new rules which went into effect this year.
While Berglund recovered from that shoulder injury, his mother, Alicia, was battling leukemia. Berglund donated bone marrow for the transplant to help her successful battle with the cancer.
Berglund used a redshirt in 2023, meaning he has two seasons of eligibility remaining. However, he would likely have a strong case for a medical hardship waiver for another season, since that shoulder injury limited him to three games in 2024.
Berglund’s sister Meredith, a former Boilermaker swimmer, is Purdue football’s assistant director of recruiting strategy.
