Carson Beck actually had a pretty solid game for Miami football against SMU. But all that's likely going to be remembered is his interception in overtime that led to the Mustangs' stunning 26-20 win.

The Georgia transfer came to Miami to take over for No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward and lead the Hurricanes into the College Football Playoff. UM came a hair short in 2024 after going 10-2 in the regular season.

Beck came back to college football after initially declaring for the 2025 NFL draft. But an elbow injury and an interception-laden season led him to Miami in an effort to rebuild his draft stock. That worked early in the season as the Hurricanes ran out to a 5-0 start and the No. 2 ranking.

But things have unraveled since then. Beck threw four picks in Miami's first loss of the season to Louisville. Then after a decent if not flashy game against Stanford, Beck tossed two more interceptions at SMU on Nov. 1. The first wasn't his fault: The gorgeous deep ball was bobbled by JoJo Trader and wound up in the hands of safety Ahmaad Moses.

But in overtime with Miami at the 9-yard line, Beck threw behind Malachi Toney and right into Moses' arms, setting up SMU for a game-winning touchdown and setting off a storming of the field in Dallas.

Fans react to Carson Beck interception

Miami fans and social media haters alike lit up with their reactions to Beck's pick. Some noted that as Beck threw the OT interception, his replacement at Georgia, Gunner Stockton, threw a touchdown in the Florida-Georgia game. (It should be noted that the Gators were winning late in the second quarter.)

Here's a sampling of some of the tamer reactions to Carson Beck's pick:

Carson Beck stats

Not all fans were ready to put the loss solely on Beck's shoulders, with plenty of blame going to coach Mario Cristobal and his play-calling habits. The offensive line got some flak too, as the Hurricanes committed 12 penalties for 96 yards on the day, most on false starts and holding calls. But Beck's reported NIL earnings make him an easy target, one he's not likely to shed anytime soon.

Here's a look at Beck's stats against SMU and for the season:

  • Stats vs. SMU: 26 of 38 (68.4%) passing for 274 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions; 5 carries for 17 yards.
  • 2025 season: 174 of 240 (72.5%) passing for 1,947 yards with 14 touchdowns and 9 interceptions; 24 carries for 51 yards and 1 touchdown.
