CBS Sports’ David Cobb has posted a “College Football QB Power Rankings” every week throughout the college football season, and he ranked Marcus Stokes No. 40 in his updated rankings after week 3. The Tigers’ quarterback moved up two spots from last week after a nice performance against UT Martin, and he’s one of eight non-Power Four quarterbacks in the top 50.
Stokes is the third-highest ranked Group of Six quarterback on the list, ranking behind Umass’ William “Pop” Watson and App State’s Malachi Singleton.
Singleton spent time at Arkansas and Purdue before landing at Appalachian State, and he has thrown for 889 yards, five touchdowns and an interception, leading the Mountaineers to a 3-0 start.
Watson transferred to UMass after three seasons at Virginia Tech, and he has thrown for 509 yards, five touchdowns and an interception in three games. The senior quarterback has also added 82 yards and two rushing touchdowns, leading the Minutemen to three wins over Rutgers, Sacred Heart and Stonehill.
Stokes finds himself at No. 40 between Kentucky’s Kenny Minchey at No. 39 and North Dakota State’s Nathan Hayes at No. 41.
The Tigers’ quarterback has one more game under his belt than most quarterbacks, but he has thrown for 1,053 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions, leading Memphis to a 3-1 record.
In his most recent outing against the Skyhawks, Stokes threw for 258 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions before being pulled late in the third quarter. After throwing an incomplete pass on the first drive, the quarterback threw 18-straight completions and ended the first half 21-for-22 for 216 yards and three touchdowns.
The West Florida transfer currently ranks No. 3 in passing yards, tied for No. 6 in touchdowns and No. 18 in quarterback ranking. He’s leading an offense that ranks No. 15 in team passing efficiency, No. 3 in first down offense and No. 16 in total offense.
There are several Group of Six quarterbacks listed behind Stokes, including Oregon State’s Braden Atkinson, Toledo’s John Alan Richter and James Madison’s Camden Coleman.
Former Tiger JC French IV, who is now at Cincinnati, ranks No. 37 in the quarterback rankings. French spent his freshman season at Memphis, but he entered the transfer portal after redshirting his first year.
The quarterback spent three seasons at Georgia Southern and entered the transfer portal again and landed at Cincinnati. French has thrown for 631 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in three games, and he has helped lead the Bearcats to a 3-0 record with wins over Boston College, Western Carolina and Miami Ohio.
It will be interesting to see if Stokes can move up in the power rankings throughout conference play. The Tigers will return to action on October 3 against Charlotte.
