A long regular season has concluded and the Texas Tech football team can now turn its attention to the postseason.
First up is the Red Raider’s first-ever trip to the Big 12 Championship game against BYU. But regardless of that outcome, Texas Tech fans should also start looking ahead to the College Football Playoff and who the Red Raiders could wind up facing in the 12-team field.
The potential opponents have started to thin out, though there are still plenty of possibilities in play. A week out from selection Sunday, here’s our best guess and how things will unfold.
College Football Playoff bracket predictions for Texas Tech football
Here are three CFP bracket predictions for the Red Raiders, based on projected outcomes for the conference championship games.
Texas Tech football gets a first-round game at home
The Red Raiders could find their way into the Top 4 of the CFP rankings this week, but mark me down as a skeptic thinking the selection committee won’t find a way to shoehorn in another SEC team into the teams getting a bye regardless of the Big 12 title game’s result.
Texas Tech football gets the 5-seed
With the Top 4 likely going to the Big Ten and SEC, Texas Tech will at least get the best path of the 5-seed and hosting the American Conference champion (either North Texas or Tulane) in Jones AT&T Stadium.
Texas Tech football will face North Texas
The Mean Green seem like the better team out of the American, and the storylines write themselves: former Red Raider and Shallowater native Eric Morris, who has been named the next head coach at Oklahoma State, getting a sendoff back at home facing his alma mater.
