Miami replaced Notre Dame as the final at-large selection and James Madison made the field as a second Group of Five representative in the final College Football Playoff rankings.
Indiana, Ohio State, Georgia and Texas Tech claimed the top four seeds. The Hoosiers beat the Buckeyes in the Big Ten title game and are the only unbeaten team in the Bowl Subdivision.
The at-large selections were No. 5 Oregon, No. 6 Mississippi, No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 8 Oklahoma, No. 9 Alabama and No. 10 Miami.
An uncompetitive loss to Georgia in the SEC championship game wasn’t enough to offset the Crimson Tide’s resumé, which included an earlier win against the Bulldogs. The Hurricanes closed the regular season winning four in a row and had a head-to-head win against Notre Dame.
Miami helped save the day for the ACC, which was in line to have no teams in the playoff after 8-5 Duke won the conference title.
Rounding out the 12-team field were two teams from the Group of Five in No. 11 seed Tulane and No. 12 seed James Madison.
Indiana, Georgia, Ohio State and Texas Tech will have a bye to the quarterfinals.
Games in the opening round are held on the home field of the higher-ranked team. The matchups are:
- No. 5 Oregon hosting No. 12 James Madison
- No. 6 Mississippi hosting No. 11 Tulane
- No. 7 Texas A&M hosting No. 10 Miami
- No. 8 Oklahoma hosting No. 9 Alabama
Tulane won the American by beating North Texas and was the highest-rated Group of Five team. That earned the Green Wave the one guaranteed playoff berth for the non-major conferences.
But JMU was a surprising second addition out of the Sun Belt due to chaos in the ACC, which resulted in 8-5 Duke winning the conference title.
The rest of the Top 25 rankings will be released later on Sunday.
