Christy Knowings’ cause of death has been revealed three weeks after the former “All That” star died at 46. Christy Knowings’ death was previously reported by TheGrio after the actress suffered a severe asthma attack, and it marked another loss for the Nickelodeon series following the death of former cast member Kianna Underwood earlier this year.
People reported that Knowings died from cardiac arrest on Aug. 11, according to her death certificate. Acute hypoxic respiratory failure and status asthmaticus were listed as conditions leading to her death, while asthma was identified as the underlying cause.
A family member previously told TMZ that Knowings suffered an asthma attack on Aug. 7 that caused brain damage. She was hospitalized in Los Angeles and placed on life support before her family made the decision to remove it four days later.
Status asthmaticus is a severe asthma attack that does not improve with standard treatment and can become life-threatening. Acute hypoxic respiratory failure occurs when there is not enough oxygen in the blood.
Christy Knowings’ death prompted tributes from friends, fans and former co-stars. Kenan Thompson remembered his former “All That” castmate as “one of the funniest people out here” and called her his “sister in comedy forever.”
Knowings joined “All That” in 1997 and appeared in more than 30 episodes through 1999. She played several characters, including Penny Lane and Jessica in the recurring “Whateverrr!!!” sketch alongside Amanda Bynes.
The Bronx native later appeared in the 2009 film “Mother and Child” and made several appearances on “Sesame Street” with her twin brother, actor Chris Knowings. She also released music, including the folk-inspired song “To the World” in 2020.
Knowings was the second former “All That” cast member to die in 2026. Underwood, who appeared during the show’s final original season, was killed in a Brooklyn hit-and-run in January at age 33.
A GoFundMe created to help with Knowings’ funeral expenses described her as a compassionate and bright presence whose humor and warmth affected the people around her.
