The Notre Dame football team suffered a heartbreaking defeat at BYU on Saturday night. Notre Dame was driving in the final minute of the game, but couldn’t get a touchdown to seal the win. Following the 28-24 loss, Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carrmade a blunt statement.

“Just gotta go back to work. Put the work in. Do what we do,” Carr said postgame, per The Athletic.

Notre Dame fans didn’t take too kindly to that quote. Fighting Irish fans responded on social media, with reactions that ranged from anger to confusion.

“Do what we do” lose every big game we play you mean, CJ?” the X account JoeIrish13 posted.

Notre Dame fans clearly weren’t happy with Carr’s response.

“It’s week 7, he’s had 6 warm up games, wtf is he talking about. How do we still have a center that can’t snap the ball properly. Why are we still throwing fades to players that haven’t demonstrated the ability to catch them. It’s unbelievable,” the X account Destraumis posted.

The loss was even more painful for Notre Dame, after the Big 12 conference revealed one more second should have been left on the clock at the end of the game. This is yet another dramatic ending of an NCAA football game this season.

Carr was trying to throw into the end zone on what was the game’s final play. The pass was incomplete, but it appeared that one second remained on the clock. While the game officially ended there, it appears there should have been one last chance for Notre Dame.

“Obviously, we’re disappointed. We didn’t play to our standard across the board, partly because of things they were doing, and part of it is some things that we did (as) Notre Dame that we can’t allow to happen. (There are) a lot of things we’ve got to use from this game to attack as we go into the bye week, and we’ll move forward from there,” Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said, per Deseret News.

Notre Dame is now 6-1 on the season after the loss. The Fighting Irish next play Navy on Halloween.
