Clemson is set to lose a defensive assistant to an ACC program.
John Scott Jr. is headed to Syracuse, where he is expected to take on a multi-title role that includes assistant head coach, defensive run game coordinator, and defensive line coach. The move ends Scott’s two-year stint on Clemson’s defensive staff and sends him to a familiar conference as he steps into an expanded position.
Scott joined the Tigers ahead of the 2024 season after spending time in the NFL with the Detroit Lions and previously coaching at Penn State. He initially arrived as a volunteer defensive assistant before settling into a full-time role with the Tigers, adding veteran experience to the defensive front room.
His coaching résumé is extensive and spans both college football and the professional ranks. Before Clemson, Scott coached defensive linemen at Penn State, South Carolina, and Arkansas, while also holding similar roles at Texas Tech and Georgia Southern earlier in his career. His path has included stops at Missouri State, Western Carolina, Norfolk State, and Louisiana-Lafayette, giving him experience across multiple levels of the sport.

Scott also brings NFL background from earlier coaching stints with the New York Jets, complementing his college experience. A Greer native, he played collegiately at Western Carolina and had brief professional playing opportunities in Canada and arena football.
For Syracuse, the hire adds a seasoned coach with deep defensive line experience and ACC familiarity. For Clemson, it marks another offseason staff change as the program continues to reshape its coaching structure heading into the next cycle.
