On Saturday, the Clemson football program kicked off its 2026 college football season with a whimper by losing to the LSU Tigers by a score of 51-10. Clemson recorded an interception on the first play of the game in this one, but virtually nothing went right for the Tigers from that point on.
The loss immediately reignited speculation that legendary Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney could be on the hot seat, as the program has been on a steady descent over the last few seasons from its championship heights.
Recently, college football insider Blake Toppmeyer broke down the sticky contract situation the Clemson brass finds itself in regarding potentially moving on from Swinney.

“Clemson firing a legend would be altogether different. It would be firing a coach for whom it’ll also commission a statue. Clemson could afford the statue, but what about Swinney’s buyout? He’d be owed $57 million if Clemson fires him, and his deal includes no offset language. That, folks, is what an impasse looks like,” he wrote.
Indeed, Swinney will almost certainly have a statue outside the Clemson home stadium one day after leading the team to two national championships during the 2010s, and appearances in multiple others.
However, things have not gone so well for Swinney and the program in recent years, with Clemson not having been a legit title contender for several seasons now, and no sign of things getting better anytime soon.
Swinney’s inability to adapt to the current transfer portal and NIL landscape of college football has generated calls for a new voice to be in charge of the Tigers’ program, but as Toppmeyer noted, doing so would come at a hefty financial price.
