Clemson football’s top four-star quarterback target sets commitment date

One of Clemsonfootball’s top quarterback targets in the 2028 recruiting class is ready to make his college decision.

Four-star signal caller Trace Hawkins announced that he will reveal his commitment on Thursday, July 30. Clemson is one of five schools still in the running, joining Duke, LSU, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

The Calhoun (Ga.) standout has become one of the Tigers’ biggest priorities at quarterback in the 2028 cycle. Clemson extended an offer in June, making Hawkins one of the first quarterbacks in the class to receive a scholarship from Dabo Swinney and his staff.

Hawkins has built a strong relationship with the Tigers over the past year. He first visited Clemson for the Duke game last fall before returning for the spring game and Spring Elite Day. He also participated in Clemson’s high school camp in early June, where he worked out for the coaching staff before eventually earning his offer.

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound quarterback is the No. 20 quarterback in the 2028 class and the No. 295 overall prospect nationally.

Hawkins is also considering LSU, which offered him around the same time as Clemson. He is scheduled to attend the season-opening matchup between Clemson and LSU in Baton Rouge on Sept. 5.

During his sophomore season in 2025, Hawkins completed an impressive campaign, throwing for 2,442 yards and 24 touchdowns while being intercepted only three times. He also added 153 rushing yards and three more scores on the ground.

Throughout his recruitment, Hawkins has emphasized that finding the right culture and a coaching staff he can trust are among the biggest factors in his decision. Clemson will learn on Thursday whether those priorities are enough to land one of its top quarterback targets.
