Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney shares update on Ole Miss tampering

Dabo Swinney spent much of January demanding accountability.

Now, with Clemson finally ready to play football again, he sounds far less interested in revisiting the issue.

The Tigers are preparing for Saturday night’s season opener at LSU, but one of the biggest offseason stories involving the program remains unresolved. Swinney said this week that he has received no update regarding the NCAA matter connected to former Clemson linebacker Luke Ferrelli.

“No, I haven’t heard anything,” Swinney said with a laugh. “It was true, he was in school for a week, it did happen. Then he magically ended up at another place. It really doesn’t frustrate me. I am just trying to win a game this weekend. That’s it. Let everybody else worry about all that stuff.”

That is a much different version of Swinney than the one Clemson fans saw in January.

Ferrelli had arrived from California through the transfer portal and enrolled at Clemson before abruptly leaving the program. Swinney later accused Ole Miss coach Pete Golding of continuing to recruit Ferrelli after he had already begun classes with the Tigers.

Swinney publicly laid out his case, including text messages he said supported Clemson’s claims, and made it clear that he believed the situation should test whether college football’s tampering rules actually carried any weight.

“I’m not trying to get anybody fired, but when is enough enough?” Swinney said on Jan. 23. “If we have rules, and tampering is a rule, then there should be a consequence for that. And shame on the adults if we’re not going to hold each other accountable.”

Months later, there has been no announced conclusion.

Clemson, meanwhile, has had little choice but to keep moving.

Ferrelli will not be part of the Tigers’ linebacker group this fall, but that position is hardly short on talent. Sammy Brown enters the season as one of Clemson’s top defensive players, while Jeremiah Alexander and Kobe McCloud are also expected to play important roles.

For Swinney, whatever happens next with the Ferrelli situation appears to be someone else’s problem.

His attention has shifted entirely to LSU.

Clemson will open its season Saturday at Tiger Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
