Clemson Poses Different Type of Challenge for Darian Mensah

The Clemson Tigers are preparing for their biggest game of this Saturday, as they will host the Miami Hurricanes in a critical ACC showdown.
Most aren't giving Clemson a chance in this game. Miami opened up as 17.5-point favorites on the road, and while the Tigers have won three straight, they were routed by the only ranked opponent they've played thus far this season.
But the Tigers look like a very different football team than they did during their Week 1 loss to LSU, and they are also the most challenging club the Hurricanes have faced yet.
Miami quarterback Darian Mensah spearheads the nation's best offense, having thrown for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns with no interceptions through his first four games. He has also completed a ridiculous 88.7 percent of his passes.
To say that Mensah is the Heisman Trophy frontrunner would be putting it lightly. He is in the middle of a potentially historic campaign, and he has some explosive weapons — like wide receiver Malachi Toney — to assist him along the way.
However, the Hurricanes have had an embarrassingly easy schedule thus far, posting wins over Stanford, Florida A&M, Wake Forest and Central Michigan.
Not to take anything away from Mensah and Miami, but it's clear that they really have not been tested yet. Clemson, though, will provide some resistance.
The Tigers have not allowed an offensive touchdown over the last six quarters, and they boast one of the better secondaries in the country led by star cornerback Ashton Hampton. Fellow cornerback Elliot Washington II has been terrific, as well, as have safeties Corey Myrick and Jerome Carter III.
Throw in the fact that Clemson has defensive end Will Heldt and linebacker Sammy Brown along its front seven, and Mensah could be in for quite a major adjustment early on this Saturday.
Of course, Mensah is talented enough where he can master the change, but that doesn't mean the Tigers won't comprise a major obstacle.
Clemson is motivated and it is playing some impressive football right now. In fact, Miami's best bet may be rattling Tigers freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds — who has certainly been shaky — rather than hoping Mensah shreds Clemson's defense.
This is the biggest game the Tigers have had since the 2024-25 College Football Playoff, when it lost to Texas in the first round.
If Clemson is able to emerge with a victory at Memorial Stadium, it could set the Tigers on the path to a potential CFP appearance … or at least revive their season.
It's going to be a rowdy environment, and I am curious to see how Mensah handles it.
