Clemsonfootball could be just days away from adding the first member of its 2028 recruiting class.

Momentum has swung heavily in the Tigers’ favor ahead of four-star quarterback Trace Hawkins’ commitment announcement on Thursday. Since the Georgia standout revealed his decision date, recruiting experts have lined up behind Clemson. Hawkins has now received three Crystal Ball predictions from 247Sports, along with a prediction from On3, all projecting him to become a Tiger.

The timing is notable because Clemson has been selective at quarterback in the 2028 cycle. Hawkins and three-star Trey Wright were the first signal callers to receive offers from the Tigers after June’s high school camp, but it now appears Clemson may not have to wait much longer to secure its top target.

Hawkins has spent the past year building a relationship with the Clemson coaching staff through multiple visits. His first trip came during the Tigers’ game against Duke last fall. Since then, he has returned for the spring game, Spring Elite Day and another visit in June that ultimately led to his scholarship offer.

LSU has been viewed as Clemson’s biggest competition after extending an offer around the same time, and Hawkins also included Duke, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Kentucky among his finalists. However, the recent wave of expert predictions suggests Clemson has separated itself entering the final stretch of his recruitment.

A commitment from Hawkins would give Dabo Swinney another early quarterback pledge, something Clemson has made a habit of in recent recruiting cycles. It would also allow the staff to shift its attention toward filling out the rest of the 2028 class with its quarterback already in place.

Hawkins has already put together an impressive résumé at Calhoun High School. The 6-foot-1 passer threw for 2,442 yards and 24 touchdowns as a sophomore while limiting mistakes with only three interceptions. He also contributed with his legs, rushing for 153 yards and three more scores. The 247Sports Composite ranks him among the nation’s top quarterbacks in the 2028 class.

All eyes now turn to Thursday, when Clemson will find out if months of recruiting pay off with its first commitment in the 2028 cycle.
