The Clemson Tigers are still trying to figure out who their starting quarterback will be for the 2026 college football season, and up until this point, there have been no concrete answers.
The general consensus has long been that Christopher Vizzina will win the the starting job over Tait Reynolds, but nothing has been confirmed.
However, head coach Dabo Swinney may be moving closer to a resolution.
The Clemson Insider has reported that Vizzina has "create a little separation" in the competition, indicating that he most likely will be under center against LSU when the season opens on Sept. 5.
"Though freshman Tait Reynolds has had a good camp and has progressed better than the coaches expected him to, one source told us Vizzina has had an exceptional camp and right now is playing at a different level than the freshman," Will Vandervort of The Clemson Insider wrote.
Vandervort added that Swinney probably won't make the announcement until the week of the LSU game because he wants to keep both signal-callers "engaged and battling for a few more weeks."
Vizzina arrived at Clemson in 2023 and has served as a backup to Cade Klubnik ever since he joined the squad.
The former four-star recruit finally got the chance to get a start last season, going 29-for-42 with 313 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to SMU.
Otherwise, Vizzina has very limited experience, which has many questioning whether or not the redshirt junior can actually lead the Tigers to a strong season.
Clemson was one of the most disappointing teams in the country last year, finishing 7-6 and losing to Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl.
The Tigers entered 2025 ranked No. 4 in the AP Poll and had national championship aspirations, but they came up well short.
Clemson is unranked this time around, but there is no doubt that the Tigers have ample talent on both sides of the ball. In fact, they have a handful of potential first-round talents on offense and defense.
Vizzina is definitely not in that category, but a strong 2026 campaign could potentially put him on the map moving forward.
Of course, if Vizzina struggles out of the gate, Swinney might not waste too much time going to Reynolds, whom he clearly likes.
