Clemson Tigers QB Christopher Vizzina Hit With Dire Warning

The Clemson Tigers are entering a new era under center, as long-time quarterback Cade Klubnik is now in the NFL.

Clemson will be rolling with Christopher Vizzina as the starter heading into 2026, and while he was always the clear choice, there doesn't seem to be a ton of confidence surrounding the redshirt junior.

In fact, incoming freshman Tait Reynolds made a serious move in spring practice and appears to be hot on Vizzina's trail with fall camp on the horizon.

Vizzina is still the obvious No. 1, but any slip ups could result in Dabo Swinney making a rather swift change.

Andy Staples of On 3 recently ranked the top 10 signal-callers in the ACC, and while Vizzina did come in at No. 9, Staples doesn't think the former four-star recruit is entirely safe at the position.

“Christopher Vizzina waited his turn at Clemson behind Cade Klubnik, and based on what Dabo Swinney said throughout the spring, the Alabama native should be the Tigers’ opening-day starter,” Staples wrote. "… “Vizzina is currently holding off freshman Tait Reynolds, but Vizzina likely will have to play well early — Clemson opens at LSU — to ensure he keeps the job. Cole Stoudt and Kelly Bryant will attest that Swinney will go to a talented freshman if necessary.”

Vizzina saw some playing time last year and even got one start, going 29-for-42 with 317 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to SMU.

While his numbers looked good on paper, Vizzina wasn't quite impressive enough to wow anyone, which is why there is some genuine unrest regarding the Tigers' quarterback situation going into the new season.

Vizzina will certainly have some compelling weapons as his disposal, as Clemson is returning wide receivers T.J. Moore, Bryant Wesco and Tyler Brown, and freshman Naeem Burroughs looks like a potential star.

But if Vizzina gets off to a slow start in 2026, Swinney might have a pretty quick hook, especially considering he has made it patently obvious that he really likes Reynolds.

Remember: Chris Denson was initially viewed as Vizzina's primary competition heading into the spring, but that rapidly changed when Swinney saw what Reynolds could do.

Vizzina will absolutely get the deserved chance to prove himself, but there is no doubt that he is under some pretty significant pressure to perform … or else.
