The Clemson Tigers entered the 2026 college football season with Christopher Vizzina under center, but it took just two games for Tait Reynolds to supplant him.
Vizzina suffered an elbow injury early in Clemson's Week 2 win over Georgia Southern and was relieved by Reynolds. Afterward, head coach Dabo Swinney officially named Reynolds the starting quarterback, something he was clearly tempted to do since fall camp.
Reynolds has looked like a true freshman, having thrown one touchdown and three interceptions thus far this season. But there is no question the 19-year-old has shown flashes.
During the Tigers' 41-13 loss to Miami last Saturday, Reynolds went 29-for-44 with 295 yards in spite of Clemson's offensive line being manhandled by the Hurricanes' more talented, more experienced front seven.
Reynolds was sacked six times in the affair, but he toughed it out and managed to at least put together a respectable performance against one of the nation's best teams.
Now, Reynolds has a golden opportunity in front of him to entrench himself as the Tigers' clear-cut quarterback of the future.
Why? Because Clemson does not have a single ranked opponent on its schedule the rest of the way, and while some of these games are certainly not gimmes (matchups against Virginia Tech and at Duke later in the season look particularly daunting), the Tigers should have a legitimate chance of winning all of them.
And in the process, Reynolds should have a fantastic chance of playing some impressive football.
A former three-star recruit, Reynolds missed his high-school senior season due to injury, so he was already playing from behind the 8-ball heading into his debut campaign at Clemson.
However, a strong spring practice and an eye-opening fall camp caught the attention of Swinney, who has made it abundantly clear he thinks Reynolds could be special.
Reynolds has the tools. He has a big arm, he's surprisingly accurate for a freshman and he's athletica, and while he isn't huge at 6-foot-2, his robust 215-pound frame helps compensate for his lack of elite height.
Things should start looking easier for Reynolds now after facing what had been the country's second-ranked defense in Week 5. Clemson has a bye this week and will then face Charleston Southern in Week 7. That could be target practice for Reynolds.
Will it be entirely smooth sailing for Reynolds in the Tigers' remaining seven games? No. He will make some mistakes, just like you would expect from a freshman. But he also should have some head-turning moments, moments that will make Clemson fans excited about the future of Tigers football.
