Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney defiantly isn’t considering retiring from coaching the Tigers. This despite years of criticism in struggling to adjust to the new era of college sports. But one rule he dove into Wednesday made Swinney gush.
Speaking with reporters at the Atlantic Coast Conference media days, Swinney addressed the new eligibility rule that’s based on age. This new ruling allows players to become guaranteed to have five years of eligibility, but only if they enroll on campus no later than the academic year after their 19th birthday.
Swinney didn’t hesitate to take a liking to the rule.

“I think that’ll clean that up,” Swinney said. “Not to say that it goes away, because some guys may just say, ‘I don’t want to be here’ or whatever. But I think it does because now that you’re finally into rev-share, you get paid monthly.”
The two-time national champion head coach believed last year became disorganized before the new ruling took place.
“Last year, everything was kind of frontloaded,” Swinney said. “It’s a different deal a year in now where guys get their rev-share stuff monthly.”
Swinney of course is helping reference the era of NIL with the “rev-share” aspect, which Clemson has lagged in. But the redshirt rule became impactful before “name, image and likeness” were all grouped together. Players became allowed to participate in a bowl game while still retaining a redshirt season in 2024.
Swinney feels this new rule will be “good for everybody.” Now he’ll aim to catapult Clemson back to the top of the ACC, but begins the season against a Lane Kiffin-led LSU team.
