Clemson’s Dabo Swinney Tears Into Reporter For ‘Gotcha’ Question

Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney admitted during the ACC Kickoff media days event in July that he’d be “raked over the coals” if his decision at quarterback didn’t produce winning results this season.
He wasn’t ready to face the music after Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds combined to throw for 105 yards and one interception in a 51-10 loss to LSU on Saturday night.
Chapel Fowler of The State Newspaper asked Swinney if he regretted anything about his roster construction after Clemson’s lopsided loss to LSU. Swinney turned his ire on the reporter and question for asking that after just one game.
“Chapel, you come with all these questions,” Swinney said. “I tell you, you’re the ‘gotcha’ guy. No, I don’t. I don’t, man. I regret being 0-1 right now. I regret that. But no… can you ask me that at the end of the season?
“The season ain’t over, we’ve got one game (played), we’ve got 11 more. What if we go 11-1? You promise me you’ll ask me that then? Good, then I’ll answer it.”

Swinney said he wouldn’t answer a question “like that” and accused Fowler of trying to be the guy in the press that stirs the pot.
“If that’s who you are, that’s fine. I get it,” Swinney said. “But I’ll answer that at the end of the season. We’ve played one game. One game, alright. Did you play football? OK, well they give you 12 games, and at the end of the year we count them up, alright. That’s when those types of questions are fair to me.
“Not after one game, to maybe the best team in the country (LSU). Maybe the best team in the country, alright? Other people have good teams and coaches and things like that too. So, give them credit. We’ve got 11 more games to go battle, and we’ll count them up. Then you can ask me whatever question you want.”
Clemson certainly didn’t look to have the better team on Saturday night, despite going against LSU with Lane Kiffin in his first season as head coach. Swinney’s team might make progress throughout the season, but its roster doesn’t look like one that can hang with the big boys.
Swinney’s only delaying the inevitable when it comes to a nobody roster.
