Cody Campbell has dismissed any notion his donation to Ken Paxton’s U.S. Senate run was “nefarious,” saying the timing of the Texas attorney general’s public threat to the Big 12 was mere coincidence.

Campbell told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Friday, July 17, that he simply supported Paxton in the U.S. Senate race. The Texas Tribune reported on July 16 that the chairman of the Texas Tech University Board of Regents was recorded providing a $274,300 donation on June 10 to one of Paxton’s fundraising committees.

A day later, Paxton sent a letter threatening to sue the Big 12 if it sanctioned Texas Tech for playing Brendan Sorsby. The Cincinnati transfer quarterback, despite violating NCAA rules after being found to have placed thousands of wagers, including some on his own team, was granted a temporary injunction allowing him to play.

“If I wanted to make a nefarious deal, there are plenty of places and ways to do so,” Campbell told the Star-Telegram. “That was not at all what happened. I contributed because I wanted to support the race.”

Campbell told the Star-Telegram he had not spoken to Paxton regarding Texas Tech’s then-ongoing Sorsby situation, and that he hadn’t spoken with the Texas attorney general since May 27, a day after he won a runoff vs. Sen. John Cornyn in the Texas primary.

“The Sorsby thing wasn’t even on the radar at that point,” Campbell said. “So, there’s nothing to be discussed. If I had discussed it with them, it wouldn’t be out of line for me to do so.”
