The Georgia Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0 in SEC) face their biggest test of the season against the Alabama Crimson Tide (5-0, 3-0 in SEC). Both teams have looked like national championship contenders; inclement weather concerns persist, and Kirby Smart's record against Alabama isn't very promising.
Georgia has had strong wins against everyone they've faced, winning by at least 20 against every opponent (Tennessee State, Western Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt). However, Alabama has played a tougher schedule, with Eastern Carolina and Florida State as their non-conference opponents so far, and has won against now-ranked Kentucky, South Carolina, and formerly ranked Mississippi State. There's a lot of pressure for the Bulldogs to keep rolling, and considering the state of the SEC, this could decide a contestant in the SEC championship too.
Georgia vs. Alabama College Football 27 simulation Result
This sim was conducted with the idea that Isiah Canion, Josh Ford, and Jorden Edmonds would be out. They were all listed as questionable on the injury report.
Neither team got on the board in the first quarter due to the field conditions. It wasn't until the second quarter that the Crimson Tide struck first, with Daniel Hill rushing in a touchdown from 19 yards out to make it 7-0 at 9:44. Both teams exchanged punts, then on Georgia's next drive, Peyton Woodring nailed a 39-yard field goal to make it 7-3 at 2:50. Then, 40 seconds later, Keelon Russell's pass was intercepted by Justin Williams, who ran it back 19 yards for a touchdown to give Georgia a 10-7 halftime lead.
Alabama countered with a Conor Talty 40-yard field goal at 8:33 to knot it up at 10, but then Georgia went on a long drive, capped off with a Nate Frazier touchdown to make it 17-10 with 3:22 left. Conor Talty kicked another field goal, this time from 37 yards out, to make it 17-13 by 8:13 in the fourth quarter, but Gunner Stockton fired a 73-yard bomb to Sacovie White-Helton for a touchdown to make it 24-13 Georgia.
Nate Frazier essentially iced the game, as he ran in his second touchdown of the day from nine yards out to make it 31-13 by 3:33 in the fourth quarter. Alabama would get a garbage-time touchdown with Keelon Russell completing a screen pass to Kaleb Edwards to reach the final score of 31-20. Alabama got one more try, but Raylen Wilson picked off Keelon Russell again on the final play.
Stats
It wasn't the most glamorous win for Georgia, but they got the job done. Both Georgia and Alabama had 4.5 yards per play, and Alabama did better on third down (eight for 16) than Georgia (five for 14). However, Georgia won the turnover battle, picking off Keelon Russell twice, while the running game did the rest.
Gunner Stockton was uninspiring, going 17 for 25 for 161 yards and a touchdown and no interceptions. However, Nate Frazier came through on his return, with 95 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.
The trenches helped Georgia win too. Georgia's offensive line did allow three sacks against Alabama, all by Jah-Marien Latham, but the Bulldog defensive line sacked Russell seven times, including three by Elijah Griffin and three by Josh Horton.
Georgia would be 6-0 and in contention for the No. 1 seed if this were to hold in real life. Georgia would cover, considering they were 1.5-point underdogs against Alabama, and the under would hit by half a point. That would be an acceptable result for Georgia fans. The sim is 4-0 in predicting matchups, so hopefully this holds up too.
