College football analyst calls for SEC Commissioner to take extreme measures against LSU

Though the college football world was stunned to see the developments in the Louisiana and Kentucky courts, only one team so far has snatched up former NFL rookies. That team? The Lane Kiffin-led LSU Tigers.

LSU landed defensive tackle Zxavian Harris and tight end Dae’Quan Wright in the “transfer portal” following the court order. It marks the first time in the history of the sport that a player has played in an NFL game and then returned to college, as Wright did. Harris was waived by the New Orleans Saints on August 8.

Now, Paul Finebaum is demanding that the SEC take action to prevent these players from playing. He equated the situation to the Brendan Sorsby controversy, though the circumstances are not the same. Finebaum called on SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey to take extreme measures. Very similar to what the Big 12 did with Texas Tech and Sorsby.

“[Sankey] is a very meticulous, careful, individual … I have no doubt that he is trying to convene all of his presidents, with the exception of the renegade school, LSU, and try to come up with a statement that they feel like sends a message, but holds up in Louisiana court … Remember the [Brendan] Sorsby situation… everyone was outraged. And finally, the Big 12 came together and found a way out. That’s what the SEC has to do.” Finebaum said on First Take.

Will the SEC act?

The SEC could, theoretically, force its hand in a similar manner to the Big 12. However, with the season approaching and LSU already adding both players, there may not be enough time for the conference to do much about it.

Regardless, the situation remains difficult to comprehend. Both players went through the NFL Draft process, signed NFL contracts. In Wright’s case, even appeared in an NFL preseason game. Now, they are free to return to college football under a court ruling. This created a path that previously did not exist.

The SEC could attempt to establish its own restrictions, but doing so could lead to another legal battle. That makes Sankey’s options extremely limited, especially with LSU already taking advantage of the ruling.

Regardless of what happens next, college football appears to have crossed another significant line. What began as a legal fight over eligibility has continued to push the sport toward a point of no return. The traditional boundaries between college and professional football are becoming increasingly difficult to define.
