The College Football Playoff selection committee will release its first rankings for the 2025 season this Tuesday night. Obviously, the SEC will be represented in the projected 12-team field.
As of now, Ohio State and Indiana are the two best teams in the AP top 25. They’re then followed by a trio of SEC schools in Texas A&M, Alabama and Georgia. There’s no question those three programs will be ranked very high by the CFP selection committee. Ole Miss is also expected to be part of the initial 12-team field. Lane Kiffin’s squad is at 7-1, with the only loss being on the road against Georgia.
During an appearance on OutKick’s “Hot Mic” this Tuesday afternoon, FOX broadcaster Tim Brando offered his thoughts on the SEC’s outlook for the CFP.
Brando is convinced we could see as many as six SEC teams in the CFP this season. He joked about it being named the “SEC Invitational” by the end of the year.
“I don’t think there’s any question they can get a minimum of five, or even six [teams] in this 12-team field,” Brando said. “I wouldn’t be shocked whatsoever.”
Will SEC get six teams in the CFP?
It’s worth noting Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is already campaigning for a three-loss team from the SEC to make the Playoff.
“What the committee does with the teams in our conference, we’ll see,” Sarkisian said. “But I know our conference is really deep. It’s really good. Probably deserving of more than three teams, I know that much. I think the SEC only got three teams in last year, which is kind of laughable, quite frankly. But we’ll see what happens this year.”
Texas would certainly benefit from the selection committee taking its conference schedule into consideration, make no mistake about it.
We’ll have to wait roughly a month for the final CFP rankings to come out.
