Few sports in the world can rival the tribalism of college football, and some media personalities can’t seem to help themselves either.
As conferences curry favor with television networks through lucrative media rights deals and the like, those networks play a huge role in shaping the narrative surrounding things like realignment and the College Football Playoff.
And that’s something that fans are privy to as well, with many being aware of the biases and conflicts of interest that may (or may not) exist within some of CFB’s top tastemakers and online figures.
CFB fans cast their vote for most ‘biased’ media personality
As the year wraps up, Awful Announcing asked thousands of its readers who they believe is the most “biased” member of the college football media based on 40 individuals with a national audience, who may be impartial towards a specific conference or Notre Dame — while only considering the opinions of voters who were familiar with that person’s work.
With all that said one man stood atop the list (and it didn’t come as much of a surprise): ESPN’s Paul Finebaum.
Wrote Awful Announcing: “We were not shocked that Finebaum topped our list. What was somewhat surprising was that his score was such an outlier, being 23 points higher than anyone else. Finebaum’s SEC-tilted coverage was no doubt going to register in our survey, but the fact that only about 1% of voters selected the ‘no notable bias observed’ answer was a bit surprising … For now, Finebaum sits atop our bias rankings with no real competition.”

Top 10 vote-getters revealed
While Finebaum came out head and shoulders above the rest of his sports media brethren, there were still a number of notable CFB faces that placed high on AA’s distinguished list:
- Paul Finebaum (ESPN) – SEC
- Dave Portnoy (Barstool & FOX Sports) – Big Ten
- Nick Saban (ESPN) – SEC
- Clay Travis (OutKick & FOX Sports) – SEC
- Brandon Walker (Barstool Sports & FS1) – SEC
- Greg McElroy (ESPN) – SEC
- Booger McFarland (ESPN) – SEC
- Kirk Herbstreit (ESPN) – SEC
- Brady Quinn (FOX Sports) – Notre Dame/other
- Taylor Lewan (Bussin’ With The Boys & ESPN) – Big Ten
As Awful Announcing noted, neither Finebaum nor ESPN will likely wear their title as a scarlet letter (it’s certainly not the first time they’ve heard it), but it’s still pretty striking how big a lead the former columnist was able to rack up among fans.
