The SEC to Explore LSU Expulsion

After all the fighting from Lane Kiffin and LSU to sign players cut from NFL training camps – even though they were legally allowed to do so – and after constantly fighting with the SEC over the last few weeks, it’s all coming to a head. The SEC is trying to maintain some semblance of control, taking the extreme measure of looking into potentially kicking LSU out of the conference.

CFN Take: The SEC is trying to control its members, and it’s going to a nuclear level to try to show who’s in charge. Cooler heads should prevail – LSU almost certainly isn’t going anywhere. – Pete Fiutak

The MAC Challenging Michigan’s Win Over Western Michigan

After initially accepting the explanation for the clock issues at the end of the 13-12 Michigan win over Western Michigan, now the MAC isn’t so sure. It’s challenging the process that allowed the officials to put one second back on the clock. The Big Ten, meanwhile, “will have no further comment on the matter.”

CFN Take: The NCAA isn’t going to overturn anything, but with Michigan getting bounced out of the AP Top 25, and with a good portion of the college football public furious over the bad look for the Big Ten and the game itself, everyone is doing their due diligence. – Pete Fiutak

Iowa Band Member Passes Away

In a horrific tragedy, Iowa student and band member Derek Phillips was taken off life support after passing out during Iowa’s win over Northern Illinois. Phillips suffered what’s being called a “sudden cardiac arrest” and was immediately taken to the hospital, where he later passed away.

College Football Playoff Could Expand to 24

The College Football Playoff is now officially in discussions to expand to a 24-team format, and it could happen as soon as the 2027 season. All of the parts involved – the conferences, networks, and CFP itself – will now do a deep dive to see if and how this could work, and whether or not it would be a good idea.

CFN Take: It’s coming, but this is a fluid situation with all the parts always looking into possible expansion and changes in the system. Even if everything is smooth, it might take at least a year to put it all together, so 2028 would be more realistic if – and it’s a big if – everyone gets to yes. – Pete Fiutak
