After so many years as a punchline, Indiana football authored one of the most unimaginable rags-to-riches stories in American sports history, defeating Miami 27-21 in the College Football Playoff championship game on Monday, Jan. 19 to cap off an undefeated regular season and win the program’s first-ever national title.
If there were any doubts the Hoosiers would finish the season as the top-ranked team in the major national polls after their latest triumph, those were quickly put to bed.
About 12 hours after finishing off Miami, Indiana was the No. 1 team in the final US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25.
Coach Curt Cignetti’s team was followed in the Coaches Poll by, in order, Miami, Mississippi, Oregon and Georgia.
