The Arizona State Sun Devils, ranked No. 20 in the College Football Playoff Top 25, also were within one position of cracking the US LBM Coaches and Associated Press polls before the Territorial Cup disappointment.
With the CFP No. 25 Arizona Wildcats burying the Sun Devils in Tempe, what would the new polls show this week?
Clearly, Arizona is moving up the ladder in terms of national respect, checking in at No. 22 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, released on Nov. 30.
Joining Arizona were Big 12 members Texas Tech at No. 6, BYU at No. 11 and Utah at No. 15.
A week ago, the Sun Devils landed just outside the US LBM Coaches Poll Top 25, receiving the most votes of any non-Top 25 team, just behind No. 24 Pittsburgh and No. 25 SMU.
But they tumbled dramatically as the US LBM poll was released. ASU received only two votes.
Ohio State, Indiana, Georgia, Oregon and Ole Miss made up the top five in the US LBM poll. Texas A&M, which lost at Texas, fell to No. 7.
After No. 22 Arizona, rounding out the US LBM Top 25 were Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Navy.
Also receiving votes: Iowa 85; Houston 73; Missouri 52; SMU 28; Washington 18; UNLV 17; Pittsburgh 15; South Florida 12; Illinois 9; Louisville 6; Connecticut 6; TCU 5; Penn State 5; Old Dominion 2; New Mexico 2; Arizona State 2; San Diego State 1.
The Associated Press poll was expected to be released around noon MST (2 p.m. ET).
With Sam Leavitt out for the season, Sun Devils backup Jeff Sims engineered another victory in Boulder, Colorado, Nov. 22, but couldn't muster any magic Friday night, Nov. 28, in a 23-7 setback against Arizona.
The Sun Devils and Wildcats now await their respective bowl destinations, to be announced following the conference championship games to be played Dec. 5-6.
