The 2026 college football season may feature the deepest field of championship contenders in years, but it also comes with enormous expectations. Here are the college football teams facing the most pressure entering the 2026 season.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

Winning 10 or 11 games simply isn’t enough in Tuscaloosa. SEC championships and national championships remain the expectation every season. Anything less than a deep playoff run will leave many wondering whether Alabama remains the sport’s gold standard.

Texas possesses elite recruiting classes, NFL-level talent, financial support, and one of the nation’s strongest rosters. The expanded College Football Playoff gives Texas more opportunities to compete for a national championship, but it also raises expectations.

Simply reaching the playoff won’t satisfy fans in Austin. Winning multiple playoff games and bringing home the program’s first national championship since 2005 is the goal.

When USC hired Lincoln Riley, the expectation was clear: restore the Trojans to national championship contention. The program that once dominated college football was expected to return to the sport’s elite level under one of the best offensive minds in the game.

Since Riley took over, USC has shown flashes of being an elite program, especially on offense, but consistency against top competition remains the biggest question. The Trojans must prove they can win the biggest games, compete in the Big Ten, and survive a schedule filled with national contenders.

After reaching the College Football Playoff in 2024 but taking a step back the following season, expectations have changed. The expanded playoff era has created a new standard across college football: talented programs are expected to find a way into the postseason conversation every year.

Josh Heupel has completely changed the trajectory of Tennessee football. When he arrived in Knoxville, the program was searching for stability after years of coaching changes and inconsistency. Heupel brought an explosive offense, a modern recruiting approach, and renewed energy around the Volunteers.

That means competing for SEC Championships, consistently challenging the conference’s elite programs, and proving they can go toe-to-toe with powerhouse rivals like the Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama.

Lane Kiffin is not walking into an ordinary rebuild. The long-time skipper is taking over one of the biggest programs in college football. LSU has national championship expectations every season because of its recruiting advantages, passionate fan base, resources, and history of competing at the highest level. The Tigers have consistently recruited elite talent, and the arrival of Kiffin has raised expectations even higher.

The previous era produced winning seasons, but LSU expects more than being competitive. The Tigers expect championships. The question is not whether LSU can win games. That is why the Kiffin hire carries so much pressure.

The question is:

Can Kiffin turn LSU back into a national championship contender?

6. Penn St Nittany Lions

The pressure has arrived in Happy Valley.

Penn State has one of the strongest brands in college football, elite recruiting resources, one of the largest fan bases in the country, and a tradition built around competing for championships. The challenge for Matt Campbell is proving the Nittany Lions can finally close the gap between being a consistent contender and becoming a true national championship threat.

Winning games against the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines will be critical in determining whether Penn State can finally move from being a consistent contender to a legitimate championship threat. Those matchups are more than just rivalry games they are measuring sticks.

To compete for a Big Ten Championship and a College Football Playoff berth, Penn State must prove it can defeat the elite teams standing in its way. The challenge has become even greater with the arrival of the Oregon Ducks into the Big Ten picture.
