College football has quickly evolved into an unpredictable machine driven by money and constant change. Those changes extend beyond playoff expansion and eligibility challenges to NIL spending. Some programs appear to be spending far beyond their means.
In a recent interview, Mike Elko discussed the current state of college football. Elko described it as not just a cash machine, but a leaking one. His comments offered an eye-opening look into how out of control certain aspects of the sport have become.

In fact, Elko warned that bankruptcy could eventually loom over major college football programs if spending is not brought under control. While that may sound unfathomable in a multi-billion-dollar industry, the reality is that spending appears to be growing without proper regulation.
“I don’t know why you ask us. It doesn’t matter what we think. I don’t know why we’re trying to become a trophy sport. What does Mike Elko want? 40. Then I won’t get fired,” Elko said jokingly to the media about playoff expansion.
“We don’t have to find a number that allows everyone to get in. It’s OK for it to be hard to get into the Playoff. None of us are answering for the good of the sport. We are answering for the good of ourselves,” he said.
Elko’s concerns stem from schools increasingly outspending their budgets in pursuit of playoff appearances and national relevance. That trend could create major financial problems for universities moving forward.

“If we don’t find a way to create some level of regulation in the market, a lot of people are going to go bankrupt pretty quick,” Elko said while discussing the need for tighter regulation. “We’re two and a half years away from having an NIL budget that’s greater than the TV revenue for our entire university.”
If there is anyone in college football whose words should carry weight on this topic, it is Elko. If concerns about spending are serious at a program like Texas A&M Aggies football, then the issue is likely far more widespread than many realize. Texas A&M already possesses some of the deepest NIL resources in the country, which makes Elko’s warning even more alarming.
College football finances become even more complicated when considering that many athletic departments also rely on state and federal funding tied to their universities. For some schools, those resources help support not only athletics, but academics as well.
If spending continues to spiral out of control, the sport could eventually face devastating financial consequences, just as Elko warned. Has the modern era of college football created an unsustainable spending race?
