Colorado Buffaloes football tickets hit slump for Weber State

Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders made sure to have an open pitch to fans during his press conference this week. The Buffs are trying to sell out the Weber State game and are short.

"We want to sell this thing out," Sanders said. "We want our fans to come out in droves, as they did in Atlanta."

Easier said than done at this point. But Sanders put more conviction into his statement a bit later and wants a true home crowd advantage.

"If you just heard the volume of that, it was unbelievable," Sanders added. "If we have tickets left, please sell this thing out, so these kids can understand what I've been talking about forever and how wonderful this fan base is."

The forty-four newest Buffs players on the roster haven't experienced Folsom Field at capacity yet. In fact, the 'Prime Effect' has gone from a roaring machine to being above average. Sanders has brought unprecedented buzz to Colorado and even a bad week doesn't compare to any of the 20 years before he arrived on campus. However, there will probably never be another period like Coach Prime's first two years in Boulder.

If the Weber State game does become an official sell-out, you can chalk it up to walk-up customers getting them last-minute. However, as of Friday night, Colorado was reportedly short of a sell-out by roughly 5,000 tickets for the home opener. The Buffs are a clear favorite in the game, and still can't draw 51,000-plus into the stands.

The concern isn't just focused on the CU box office either. The secondary market has weakened, leaving ticket prices to plummet. StubHub has tickets listed from $42 less than 24 hours before the game. Just as a reference, two tickets in Section 103, Row 19 were listed for $64 per ticket, which is $128 after fees. There was no way this could've happened three years ago.

Weber State is Colorado's only non-FBS opponent in 2026, and kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+. But this game could come dangerously close to being the smallest crowd in Sanders' tenure at Folsom Field. Last November, over 43,000 fans showed up to the Arizona State game and that remains the low point.

The largest crowd for a CU football game at Folsom Field was 54,972 fans on Sept. 3, 2005 against Colorado State. One of the only games held on campus for the Rocky Mountain Showdown during that era.

The demand for CU football has gone down since the end of the 2024 season. After going 3–9 last year, the season ticket renewal rate dropped as well. Even after pulling off an upset over Georgia Tech and receiving votes in the last AP Top 25 poll, Sanders and the Buffs aren't as "Prime Time" as they once were.

"I really think we have the best fans in the country, knowing what transpired on the field last season," Sanders said. "We had a lot of lackluster effort at times, but they showed up and showed out."

Sanders is hoping stacking up some wins will bring the hype back. We'll see over the coming week if that happens or not.
