Colorado faces uphill bowl path despite Deion Sanders' overhaul

Colorado football enters 2026 with more optimism than it had a year ago, but the road back to bowl eligibility is still going to be rough. Deion Sanders has added talent through the transfer portal, and the staff changes in Boulder give the Buffaloes a different feel heading into the season. Even so, the national perception is that Colorado will miss a bowl for the second straight year.

Those projections came from a few different outlets, which slotted the Buffaloes outside any bowl-game contention. It is a reminder of how hard it is to win consistently in the Big 12, where Colorado will have to keep pace with programs like Utah, Texas Tech, Arizona State and BYU. The Buffaloes were 3-9 in 2025, 4-8 in 2023, only breaking through with a 9-4 mark and an Alamo Bowl trip in 2024.

New staff with new hope

Sacramento State Hornets head coach Brennan Marion listens to one of the assistant coaches yell at players on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings, South Dakota.

The biggest changes in Boulder are at both coordinator spots. Brennan Marion is in charge of the offense, and Chris Marve now runs the defense after his promotion from linebackers coach. Marion’s scheme should help young quarterback Julian Lewis by getting the ball out quickly and creating space for Colorado’s playmakers, while also keeping a physical run game in the mix.

The road to six wins

Marve brings a more aggressive defensive style, and Colorado has added versatility on that side with players such as Boo Carter, Randon Fontenette and Naeten Mitchell. If those pieces settle in quickly, the Buffaloes could be much tougher to handle than they were in 2025. Still, the schedule will not give them much room for error.

A home stretch against Utah and Texas Tech in the middle of the season could end up deciding everything. If Colorado steals at least one of those games, bowl eligibility starts to look realistic again.
