In the span of an hour, Colorado football has arguably lost its top offensive and defensive player, with both wide receiver Omarion Miller and safety Tawfiq Byard expected to enter the transfer portal when it opens in early January.

Byard, a South Florida transfer, burst onto the scene with an impressive performance at last year’s spring game. During the season, Byard led the Buffaloes in tackles (79) and had eight tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.

He was by far the Buffaloes’ best defensive player and seemed always to make an impact when he was on the field. He routinely took on a leadership role off the field, answering questions from the media when things weren’t going well.

Byard will enter the portal in January as one of the most coveted safeties, especially with two years left to play. He joins Miller, defensive tackle Jeheim Oatis, defensive backs Noah King, Terrance Love, and TJ Branch, along with linebacker Mantrez Walker, as Buffs to announce their transfer intentions.
