Colorado football hosts No. 10 Texas Tech on Saturday, and this week's Throwback Thursday is bringing back memories of a meeting at Folsom Field 20 years ago.
On Oct. 14, 2006, a 0-6 Colorado team stunned Mike Leach's Red Raiders, 30-6, before 50,233 fans. The victory ended a 10-game losing streak that matched the longest in program history and gave first-year coach Dan Hawkins his first win in Boulder.
Texas Tech arrived with a 4-2 record and an offense averaging 31.7 points per game. Colorado held the Red Raiders' air-raid offense scoreless for nearly three full quarters, limited them to 31 rushing yards and forced five turnovers.
Bernard Jackson ran the show
Quarterback Bernard Jackson completed 11 of 17 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns, hitting tight end Riar Geer for a 28-yard score on Colorado's opening possession and Jarrell Yates for a 29-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Jackson also ran for 54 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter, to complete the 30-6 score.
Hugh Charles supplied the ground-game punch, carrying 17 times for 119 yards. His 74-yard run in the third quarter was erased when officials ruled he stepped out of bounds, yet Colorado still finished with a 228-31 rushing-yard advantage.
Crosby and defense finish the job
Mason Crosby hit field goals from 56, 26 and 53 yards, providing 12 points on a day when Colorado never let Texas Tech establish its Air Raid tempo.
Safety Ryan Walters and the University of Washington's current defensive coordinator recorded two interceptions, and Graham Harrell threw three picks while completing 26 of 39 passes for 236 yards. Texas Tech ran only three plays in Colorado territory through three quarters before Danny Amendola's late touchdown reception broke up the shutout.
Colorado's 30-6 win remains its largest margin of victory against Texas Tech. Folsom Field fans stormed the turf afterward, celebrating a game that gave Hawkins and the program a needed breakthrough after many losses, scandals, and coaching changes.
