The Colorado Buffaloes dropped its third straight game Saturday, and after back-to-back terrible losses, it is becoming increasingly difficult to believe the Buffs' problems are simply the result of individual mistakes. The bigger issue may be internal. But head coach Deion Sanders has yet to provide meaningful solutions
The Buffs were defeated 29-7 at home by No. 11 Texas Tech, showing little improvement after being dominated at Baylor the previous week. In the middle of another season spiraling out of control, Coach Prime continues to point fingers rather than address the issues within his own program.
After the Texas Tech loss, Sanders was asked about Julian Lewis being benched. His response was telling: "I would love for JuJu to come here and he tell you what happens." But as the head coach, Sanders ultimately makes the decisions about who plays and who sits.
Shifting the responsibility to the player only adds to the perception that the program lacks accountability.
Colorado has had just one winning season under Sanders, in 2024, and even that campaign ended with a bowl loss to BYU. That team was led by Travis Hunter and Sanders' son, Shedeur Sanders. Since their departures, the Buffs have struggled to remain relevant, failing to build the consistency needed to compete at a high level. The transfer portal has also become a major factor.
In today's college football landscape, repeatedly benching players can quickly lead to them leaving for another program. If recruits brought in by Sanders are constantly entering the portal, the coaching staff must take responsibility for why the roster continues to turn over.
Colorado is now 2-3 and winless in Big 12 play, with no obvious signs of a turnaround. Sanders needs to find answers–and quickly. The Buffs have a bye week to regroup before hosting No. 12 Utah on Saturday, October 17. lf things do not change, Colorado may soon have to consider changing its head coach.
