Cherry Creek knocked off Legend in an overtime thriller to set up a 1 vs 2 battle with Valor Christian this weekend. Mountain Vista won in a shootout and Broomfield jumped in,to the top 10 with another impressive win.
Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state title. Below are the top 25 Colorado high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of September 13.
1. Cherry Creek (3-0)
Cherry Creek beat Legend 34-28 in an overtime thriller. After the Bruins stuffed Legend at the goal line, backup quarterback Montae Johnson hit Yorel Autry for the game-winner. Starting quarterback Bentley Unruh was a very efficient 12-of-15 for 177 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Alijah Landrum-Hamilton continues to look like a major steal as a Wyoming commit and hauled in seven catches for 160 yards and three touchdowns. Talented junior running back Elijah Cromwell added 87 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Bruins are now riding a 30 game winning streak and will have their biggest test of the year when they play at No. 2-ranked Valor Christian, who are coming off a bye.
2. Valor Christian (2-1)
The Eagles had a bye over the weekend and will host Cherry Creek in a battle of the state’s top two teams.
3. Ralston Valley (2-1)
The Mustangs had a dominant 35-17 win over Arapahoe. Running back Sawyer Blomquist had a breakout game, rushing for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Logan Gabler threw for 195 yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for a pair of scores, and receiver Mason Lang caught three passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. The Mustangs will host Fairview on Friday.
4. Grandview (3-0)
The Wolves had a bye over the weekend and will play at No. 16-ranked Arapahoe on Friday.
5. Legend (1-2)
The Titans actually moved up in the rankings, and rightfully so, after losing an overtime heartbreaker to Cherry Creek 34-28. Legend gave the defending state champs all they could handle and then some, and got a strong effort from Wyoming commit Freddie Burke. Burke caught five passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and added a 35-yard pick-six on the defensive side of the ball. Junior quarterback Kellen Mauck completed 15-of-29 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns, and linebacker Braylon Aukland had a team-high nine tackles, including three for loss. The Titans had the ball first in overtime but were stuffed on 4th and goal from the one-yard line. Cherry Creek then walked it off with a touchdown pass from Montae Johnson to Yorel Autry. The Titans will host Regis Jesuit on Thursday,
6. Mountain Vista (2-1)
The Golden Eagles had a big 40-33 win in a top-10 showdown over Montrose. Marquise Reese to Brooklyn Baily continues to be a lethal combination, and the two went off again this week. Reese completed 20-of-29 passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 69 yards and a score. Bailey caught eight passes for 152 yards and a touchdown, and running back Brody Callister scored the game-winning touchdown late in the 4th to seal the deal. The Golden Eagles will host Thunder Ridge on Friday.
7. Eaglecrest (3-0)
The Raptors had a bye over the weekend and will host Cherokee Trail on Thursday.
8. Palmer Ridge (3-0)
The Bears had a bye over the weekend and will play at Air Academy on September 18.
9. Broomfield (3-0)
The Eagles moved into the top 10 with an impressive 29-7 win over Erie. Quarterback Slate Saunders threw for 186 yards and three touchdowns, and receiver Sean Newton caught four passes for 85 yards and three touchdowns. Wideout Gavin Montoya added five catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles will host Denver East on Friday.
10. Cherokee Trail (3-0)
The Cougars moved to 3-0 with a 31-7 win over Rocky Mountain. Junior quarterback Bryson Peterson was lights out in this one, completing 24-of-30 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers. Evan Smith caught five passes for a game-high 85 yards and a touchdown, and running back Owen Newell rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown as well. The Cougars will play at No. 7-ranked Eaglecrest on Friday.
