The Colorado Buffaloes are coming off a very disappointing season as they enter coach Deion Sanders’ fourth year in Boulder. Last year the Buffaloes went 3-9 as three different quarterbacks took snaps for second-worst offense in the Big 12. One of those quarterbacks was Julian Lewis who returns as the starter in his second year at the school.

As a freshman Lewis completed 52 of 94 passes for 589 yards, four touchdowns and a 122.0 passer rating. This year he expects to be even better as he told ESPN on Tuesday at Monster Energy Big 12 Football Media Days. The main reason for that improvement? Colorado is going to study defenses this season.

“I’m actually looking at the defenses now. Last year we wasn’t really looking at defenses much. Just kind of high school free-balling. Just out there playing football. But it’s a lot bigger than that now so it should be fine.”

As noted in the follow-up question, Colorado has a new offensive coordinator this season in Brennan Marion, who was the head coach at Sacramento State last season. He replaces Pat Shurmur who was demoted to quarterbacks coach after the team started 3-6. The change did not inspire greater offensive output at the time.

Whatever was happening in film sessions last season, Lewis sounds optimistic that the right changes have been made. Based on what he said above, grinding some tape sounds like a good start.
