Commanders scouts present at one of the top college football games of the weekend

Ahead of the Washington Commanders’ Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Commanders sent scouts to two college football games: Texas Tech versus Houston this past Friday and Missouri versus Troy.

The matchup between Texas Tech and Houston was one of the best games of the week in college. While both teams feature draft-quality quarterbacks, they also have defensive players the Commanders probably wanted to pay attention to, including first-team All-American defensive lineman A.J. Holmes Jr.

Houston also has a pair of cornerbacks the Commanders should keep an eye on: Will James and Jalen Mayo. Both corners had an interception in their most recent game. Mayo also had four total tackles. Houston’s top wide receiver, Amare Thomas, also had a good game and could be a solid draft selection for Washington in April. Thomas finished the game with seven receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Washington has the entire regular season to go even though they are already sitting at 0-2. However, looking toward the draft, the Texas Tech/Houston game showed a lot of potential at wide receiver and on defense, arguably two of its biggest weaknesses.

Turning to the Missouri game, Commanders scouts likely had their eyes on Tiger running back Jamal Roberts, who finished with 22 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown. He also had two receptions for 13 yards. Jacory Croskey-Merritt is a solid running back, but he would probably be better as a No. 2. Washington will probably be watching a lot of running backs this college football season, especially in the Big 12, which seems to have a lot of talent at that position.
