COMMENTARY: What losing Davis means for Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – On Monday, Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel broke the shocking news that star tight end Ethan Davis will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.
For a Volunteer offense that features a freshman quarterback, a pair of sophomore receivers, and youth across the offensive line, losing the senior tight end serves as a tremendous blow.
“I hate it for Ethan because of the work that he put in and his growth as a person and player,” Heupel said. “And now his season is cut short.”
Across the first two games, Davis had become a comfortable red zone target for quarterback Faizon Brandon, as the two connected for a touchdown in each of the Volunteers’ first two contests.
Losing Davis not only leaves a gaping hole at tight end for Tennessee, but could also have a considerable impact on Brandon’s development.
Significant contributions from a tight end are imperative for a young quarterback, as they often are responsible for running short routes like drags, curls, and outs.
Even more concerning for Tennessee, however, is the lack of depth they possess at the tight end position.
The most likely candidate to start for Tennessee is DaSaahn Brame, a sophomore who appeared in nine games for the Volunteers in 2025.
His contributions were minimal, hauling in just six catches for a grand total of 63 yards, 47 of which came in SEC play.
“[DaSaahn] has got to be prepared and take advantage of the opportunity.” Heupel said.
While Brame possesses the physical prerequisites for being an effective tight end, standing at 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, he lacks the high volume experience that Davis brings.
It is safe to say, therefore, that Brame will likely have a fraction of the presence that Davis provides as a threat in the passing game.
Though Davis totaled just three receptions across the first two games, the value of his presence extends well beyond the stat sheet.
His proven ability as a pass-catcher spread the field, opening up lanes for Tennessee receivers.
Unfortunately for the Volunteers, his injury makes an already predictable offense significantly more calculable.
Davis’ absence, along with Brame’s lack of experience allows opposing defenses to allocate more attention to Volunteer wideouts, making life even more difficult for Brandon.
This is especially true for SEC opponents, who now have the opportunity to sacrifice an extra defensive back in exchange for a spy linebacker, in order to keep Brandon from improvising.
Davis’ injury means more for Tennessee than what meets the eye, and could feasibly cause a chain reaction of consequences for the Volunteers.
