Conference sacks leader Amarie Fleming commits to Texas Tech football

David Bailey and Romello Height have set a ridiculously high standard this season for Texas Tech football edge defenders.

Bailey, who joined the Red Raiders in April from Stanford, leads the FBS with 12 1/2 sacks and is one of four finalists for the Lombardi Award that honors the college football’s top linemen and linebackers. Height, who joined the Red Raiders in January from Georgia Tech, has 7 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. They’re vital cogs on a 10-1 Tech team that boasts the FBS’ third-ranked scoring defense.

Now, the Red Raiders hope to add another disruptive player from where those two came: the NCAA transfer portal.

Amarie Fleming, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound edge defender from NCAA Division II Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, announced a commitment to Texas Tech on Thursday, Nov. 20. He led the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in sacks this season.

Fleming is among the Division II leaders in sacks and tackles for loss. Allen lists him with 13 1/2 sacks, while the NCAA website lists him with 14 1/2, which would be fourth or second in D-II. He had 18 tackles for loss, which is tied for fifth. He also was credited with 48 tackles, second on the team, and 4 forced fumbles.

Allen finished the season last week, going 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets, picked to finish ninth in the SIAC preseason poll, ended up fourth.

Fleming was a sophomore this season. As a freshman in 2024, he was credited with 21 tackles, including 3 1/2 tackles for loss and 1 1/2 sacks.

Fleming played high-school football at Mayo (Fla.) Lafayette.
