The Florida Gators have an emerging group of wide receivers for Jon Sumrall’s first season. Outside of the top three studs, there is one player who could break out in Wake Forest transfer Micah Mays.

When you play for the Florida Gators at wide receiver, there is certain level of expectation placed upon you.

There is a storied history at the position. From Ike Hilliard and Chris Doering, to Jabar Gaffney and Reche Caldwell, along with Percy Harvin and Demarcus Robinson, there have been some great receivers throughout the history of the program.

Head coach Jon Sumrall knows that you need to have an explosive offense in Gainesville, and he’s been working hard on making that happen.

This year, the wide receiver position is arguably the deepest on the roster. Vernell Brown III, Dallas Wilson, and Eric Singleton Jr. are a fantastic trio to build around. Where things get more interesting is how deep the room is. On3 Sports’ Ari Wasserman highlighted that transfer receiver Micah Mays could be a breakout star.

This wouldn’t be a list about potential if there wasn’t a Florida player on it, right? Well, the Gators have turned the page to the Jon Sumrall era. Like his predecessors, Sumrall’s job is to get Florida back into College Football Playoff contention. That may take some time, but Mays, a transfer from Wake Forest, may expedite the process. Maybe this is an overreaction to his spring game performance over the weekend – he had four receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown – but the 6-foot-1, 195-pounder has been a consistent standout throughout spring practice. Dallas Wilson, who also could be on this list, has missed time, and Mays has capitalized on it this spring. The Gators also have Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singleton on their roster. What if Florida has one of the best receiver rooms in the country this year?

His performance in the spring game was excellent, and he showed the ability to thrive if Wilson misses more time. It’s especially important since Wilson missed eight games and the spring game this year.

Mays showed the deep speed to stack cornerbacks that you want to see from an X-receiver, including a 75-yard touchdown catch.

With how Sumrall has prioritized the offense, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them focus on rotating their deep room, including the three talented freshmen they just signed.
