Notre Dame landed the nation's top recruiting class in the 2026 cycle and the Irish staff is off to a strong start in 2027. The Irish staff has added to its already strong 2027 haul by landing a commitment from Cincinnati (Ohio) Anderson cornerback Ace Alston, who chose the Irish over Ohio State, USC, LSU, Tennessee, Missouri and Indiana.
Alston has been a target of the Irish for a long time, and during his recruitment he made five different visits to South Bend, including a pair of game visits during the season. Alton made it to South Bend to watch the Irish beat Purdue by a 56-30 score, and he returned in October to watch the Irish beat USC 34-24. Tennessee, USC, LSU and others made a hard push for Alston, but for much of the last several months the Irish were always considered the team to beat.
As a junior, Alston racked up 53 tackles, broke up 17 passes and picked off two throws for an Anderson team that advanced to the Ohio Division 2 state championship. He was also outstanding as a sophomore, registering 46 tackles, 10 pass break ups, three interceptions and two forced fumbles. Alston and the Raptors made it to the state championship during his sophomore season as well, and he has the winning background that Notre Dame covets.
The 5-11, 175-pound cornerback is a smooth cover man with impressive ball skills. He's a smart, high football IQ corner that gets his hands on a lot of throws. Over the last two seasons he has broken up 27 passes, which is outstanding, especially when you consider how infrequently he gets targeted most games. He's a solid tackler an an overall sound football player. Alston plays a lot of off coverage in high school, but he has the length, athletic skills and coverage instincts to eventually transition to a highly effective cover player when in press looks as well. He's a good fit for the outside cornerback positions, but he also has the kind of length, coverage skills and frame to play in the slot as a nickel as well.
Alston is a consensus Top 200 recruit and is ranked as the nation's No. 115 overall player on the 247Sports composite ranking. The smooth cover man also earned a 4.0-star grade and a Top 150 caliber ranking on the Irish Breakdown board.
The Anderson standout had an impressive offer list that included the Irish, Ohio State, Alabama, Ohio State, USC, Michigan, Oregon, LSU, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Indiana, Penn State, Ole Miss, Missouri, Nebraska, Louisville, Auburn, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Illinois, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Arkansas, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Purdue, Syracuse, Maryland, Boston College, Duke and West Virginia
Alston is the 8th player to commit to Notre Dame in the 2027 class. He joins Georgia quarterback Teddy Jarrard, Pennsylvania offensive lineman James Halter, Wisconsin lineman Richie Flanigan, Alabama linebacker Ellis McGaskin, Florida linebacker Amarri Irvin, California defensive back Khalil Terry and North Carolina snapper Sean Kraft.
