Could Husan Longstreet Become LSU’s future star quarterback?

The addition of Husan Longstreet this summer may ultimately prove to be one of the more important moves Lane Kiffin made when rebuilding this LSU Tigers roster.

Longstreet entered the program as a former five-star recruit who spent his freshman season at USC, where he appeared in four games and completed 13 of 15 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

Now at LSU, Longstreet has an opportunity to develop under Kiffin and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. while learning behind Sam Leavitt. The Tigers have plenty of quarterback talent in the room, but Longstreet’s ceiling is particularly intriguing.

At six-foot-one and 195 pounds, Longstreet possesses the arm talent and mobility to fit what Kiffin wants to do offensively. He was also highly productive at the high school level, throwing for more than 8,500 yards and 83 touchdowns during that span.

Perhaps most importantly, Longstreet has already shown that he can make plays with his legs. During his limited action at USC, he rushed for 76 yards and two scores, giving LSU another quarterback capable of extending plays and creating outside of structure.

That skill set could make him especially valuable in Kiffin’s offense. Longstreet isn’t expected to start this season and may not see the field at all, but LSU appears to have one of the more intriguing quarterback rooms in the country. Longstreet has reportedly pulled away from Landen Clark in the battle for the backup role, giving the Tigers confidence that they have a capable option behind Leavitt.

For now, Longstreet’s biggest opportunity is development. But with his pedigree, athleticism and natural passing ability, there is plenty of reason to believe he could eventually become much more than a backup.
