Could Nebraska's new defensive coordinator bring one of his top players to Lincoln with him? San Diego State linebacker Owen Chambliss is planning to enter the transfer portal.

Chambliss had a successful 2025 under DC Rob Aurich. He finished the year with 110 tackles, 4.0 sacks and 9.5 TFLs for the Aztecs.

Aurich's hire brings about a philosophical shift for the defense, as he runs a 4-2-5. The Huskers have run a 3-3-5 scheme under Matt Rhule over the past three seasons.

In his first season at San Diego State, Aurich's defense finished fifth in scoring, allowing 12.6 points per game. The Aztecs' defense was also in the top ten for yards per game (266.7), yards per pass (5.1), rushing touchdowns allowed (5), and opponent completion percentage (53.3).

Nebraska is sure to be aggressive in the transfer portal for 2026. It makes sense to start with players who have experience in the new system and have thrived.
