Penn State has been suffering a couple of tough blows on the recruiting trail in the Class of 2027, specifically at the running back position. One of Penn State’s most recent recruiting losses came when four-star running back Aiden Gibson flipped his commitment from the Nittany Lions to another Big Ten program, Rutgers.

Gibson was seen as a potential long-term plan in the backfield for new head coach Matt Campbell, and was considered a good Plan B after the current recruiting class had previously lost a commitment from Kemon Spell, one of the top running backs in the nation (Spell eventually committed to Georgia). Still, there is one player who has a chance to earn a standout role with the Nittany Lions.

Quinton Martin Jr., who most recently sat behind veteran stars Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, is no stranger to waiting his turn. Had Gibson decided to stay in Happy Valley, there would have been countless questions about Martin’s role. Now, despite lingering questions about injury worries, he has a legitimate route to a No.2 role behind presumed starter Carson Hansen, one of the more experienced and reliable starters to follow Campbell from Iowa State. Most importantly, Hansen is a senior, and players like James Peoples and Cam Wallace are juniors.

Martin has already shown what he can do as a primary rushing option when given the chance. Martin led the Nittany Lions with 103 rushing yards on 20 carries in a Pinstripe Bowl victory over Clemson at the end of the 2025 season.

While there are several freshmen behind him, Martin can take advantage of any opportunity he gets to see the field. If he proves to be successful, then perhaps Campbell may not need to rely on recruiting. If anything, Martin is the perfect contingency plan.
