Michigan fired head coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday afternoon. The news was first reported by the ESPN trio of Adam Schefter, Pete Thamel, and Dan Wetzel.
Michigan AD Warde Emmanuel released a statement and said Moore was "terminated, with cause."
As is usually the case with head coach firings, the next few days will swirl with rumors of Michigan players entering the portal. Some of it will be nothing more than noise, but there will likely be a few talented Wolvernines exploring their options elsewhere.
Could that lead to a reunion of LSU football and five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood?
Underwood, the No. 1-ranked player in his class, committed to LSU in January of 2024 and remained firm on his pledge for months. Michigan kept recruiting the hometown kid and eventually pulled off the flip. In November, weeks before the 2025 class signed, Underwood decommitted from LSU and joined Michigan's recruiting class. It was a major blow to LSU.

Could a coaching change at Michigan prompt Underwood to enter the portal? And if he does, is LSU a potential destination?
Underwood's original LSU commitment wasn't solely about the school. Underwood had a strong relationship with LSU QBs coach Joe Sloan. LSU fired Sloan after the Tigers fired Brian Kelly in October. Most of LSU's staff will be moving on after the bowl game, too. LSU won't have those relationships to lean on if Underwood portals up.
But new LSU head coach Lane Kiffin is one of the top offensive minds in the country. Underwood's connection to LSU and Kiffin's reputation could be enough to draw Underwood's attention. With Kiffin in charge, LSU has made a lot of noise with how aggressively it plans to be in spending for talent.
Michigan made a strong offer to land Underwood in the first place. And while Moore might be gone, the donors who paid for that deal aren't. If Michigan's next head coach views Underwood as a priority, that money isn't going anywhere.
LSU would have to match Michigan's deal and present the talented QB with a plan that sells Underwood on LSU being the best place for his future. Kiffin has worked magic in the portal before, but this would be one of the biggest gets of his career.
For now, this is all hypothetical. Underwood remains a Michigan Wolverine and it will probably be a few weeks before we know more about his future.
